A classic Mini Cooper made headlines on 24 October 2012 after being hidden away in a suburban garage for close to four-decades.

The old Cooper was bought in 1966 new, then tucked away from 1976 following the sweltering summer that year.

At the time, it was expected to fetch a cool £12,000!

One careful owner: Brian Smith with the Mini in 1970, six years before leaving it in his garage

You’d think after uncovering a gem like this (pictured above in its 70s hay-day), the owners would be wanting to cash in and sell the vehicle fast!

The family said:

‘It is a classic car and hopefully it will move to a place where it can be restored to its former glory.

‘There are no real car enthusiasts in the family so we decided to put it up for auction.

‘The car needs renovation and we don’t have the expertise to do it.’

At 22,270 miles on the clock, the Mini Cooper was only more sought after, eventually gogin to a lucky bidder at the Sherbourne Chartehouse auctions.

The first Mini Cooper was released in 1959.

It later became known and loved as the most popular British car ever made – with more than 5.3m cars sold.
